Preparing your horse
for transport.

What to do in the days before a haul so your horse loads calmly, travels comfortably, and arrives ready to go.

Most transport problems start before we arrive. A horse that hasn’t been near a trailer in months, or one that’s dehydrated because feed was pulled too early, is already at a disadvantage before we pull out of the driveway. Here’s what makes a real difference.

One to two weeks out

Documents and preparation.

The day before

Feed, water, and rest.

Morning of the haul

What to have ready at pickup.

Documents

  • Current Coggins (original or certified copy)
  • Health certificate if crossing state lines
  • Any venue-specific health requirements

Horse ready

  • Halter and lead rope on or nearby
  • Horse caught and accessible at pickup time
  • Any medications or supplements labeled and packed
  • Fly sheet or blanket if weather calls for it
Special situations

Mares with foals, first-timers,
and nervous horses.
